JAA updates Code of Conduct

24 January 2024

The Jewellers Association of Australia (JAA) has enhanced the JAA Jewellery Industry Code of Conduct by incorporating the following provision:

When sourcing precious metals, Code Signatories must make all efforts to be aware of the origin of the precious metal goods to ensure they are not supporting supply chains that are or might be involved in conflict minerals and serious human rights abuse.

The aim of the inclusion is to align with best practices, fostering increased consumer confidence and trust when engaging in transactions with Code Signatories.

“This amendment aims to cultivate a culture among Code Signatories that emphasises conducting their business in a fair, honest, and ethical manner, in accordance with the highest industry standards.” says JAA President, Joshua Sharp.

About the JAA Jewellery Industry Code of Conduct

Established in 2009 to encompass the entire jewellery industry, the JAA Jewellery Industry Code of Conduct distinguishes Code signatories within the field. This Code outlines the highest standards in the jewellery industry. The Code delineates preferred standards for the procedures and conduct of signatories in the Australian jewellery industry, aiming to enhance protection for both Code Signatories and consumers. Additionally, it functions as a benchmark for resolving disputes.

Every JAA member is mandated to be a Code Signatory. By becoming Code Signatories, businesses commit to adhering to both the spirit and letter of the Code of Conduct.

The Code's requirements reflect industry best practices, fostering fairness, honesty, and ethics. It also serves as a guide for Code Signatories to understand the demands of relevant federal and state laws.
